Mayor Heilmann at Silgan Dispensing Systems Hemer GmbH (formerly MWV Calmar)
At the invitation of Managing Director Sven-Uwe Höhm, Mayor Michael Heilmann and Kirsten Staubach (Business Development, Hemer) recently visited Silgan Dispensing Systems Hemer GmbH – formerly better known by MeadWestvaco Calmar GmbH. Since spring this year, the company, one of Hemers’ largest employers, has been trading under the name of the new owner. Managing Director Sven-Uwe Höhm and Thomas Gratzfeld (Head of Engineering), Dirk Hellmich (Head of HR) and Stefan Schellnack (Head of Finance) presented Mayor Heilmann the next investments and extensions at the Hemer location. They demonstrated, among other things, that the available production area of 15,000 square meters will be fully utilized within the next two to three years. Due to the strong growth, Silgan Dispensing Systems has already hired 30 new employees in Hemer over the past six months and is continuing to expand. Within the next three years, Silgan Dispensing Systems will invest 18 million EUR into the expansion of the growing “Healthcare” area and commercialize two new product lines for the household sector.
Silgan Dispensing Systems Hemer GmbH is – among others – characterized by a long-term service of the employees. Approximately 146 of the approximately 400 employees are in the company for up to 30 years, the average service is 14 years. Head of HR Dirk Hellmich said, that the KPI of personnel turnover in the company is not measured because this is hardly possible. “Like many other companies,” Dirk Hellmich continued, “we are also faced with the shortage of specialists. We are trying to compensate this by offering numerous interesting apprenticeships, especially in the technical field. The young people have really good chances with us to get a future-proof workplace in the company. Nevertheless, this measure is not sufficient to compensate for the need for skilled workers linked to growth. ”
Mayor Heilmann also agreed to contribute to the commitment of the specialists by offering the city of Hemer an attractive environment for its citizens. The managers of Silgan Dispensing Systems Hemer also took the opportunity to address problems to Mayor Heilmann, who are connected with the planned expansion course. This includes, in particular, the broadband expansion in the Hemer industrial area called “Eisenbahnschleife”, where the companies located there can be offered a faster, more competitive Internet connection if necessary. With the support of Kirsten Staubach, a conversation with Telekom and interested investors from the entire industrial area took place shortly before.
In the course of the planned expansion at the site of Silgan Dispensing Systems the topic “lack of industrial land” was addressed. Fortunately, Mayor Heilmann reported about initial talks with the district government in Arnsberg to find a solution in the medium term.
