January saw cosmetic packaging novelties abound at ADF&PCD and PLD in Paris: so what are your need-to-know launches for 2020?
Located on the calendar between long-term beauty packaging fixtures Luxe Pack Monaco and Cosmopack in Bologna, the Aerosol & Dispensing Forum and Packaging of Perfume, Cosmetics & Design (ADF&PCD) event is now a major diary date and a similar magnet for new packaging launches.
While 2020’s edition – which took place in Paris’ Port de Versailles expo centre from 29-30 January – saw the addition of a PLD event (standing for Packaging of Premium & Luxury Drinks) to proceedings, cosmetics packaging remained a key focal point for many of the 650 exhibitors, and this article will focus on trends dominating PCD.
Unsurprisingly, a driving theme linking launch activity at PCD booths was sustainability. But there are many shades of green, with some packaging options meeting one sustainable criterion and others meeting several, or incrementally advancing established methods. The onus, meanwhile, is on buyers to decide just how deep a green they want to go.
Choices, choices
Flexibility and versatility are perennial packaging buzzwords, and new concepts at PCD proved no exception. Silgan Dispensing, for instance, took advantage of PCD to promote its Sinfonia Crème range.
Sinfonia is a well-established line in sprayers for hair, sun and body care, but the supplier has extended its platform to meet facial care and make-up needs. It has introduced a new set of closures to fit the 18-400 bottleneck size that is the standard for facial lotions, and these are available in different plastics, in metal, and as straight or stepped versions.
The one Sinfonia Crème engine can also be matched with a wide range of heads, cream orifices, overcaps and outputs; while a lotion pump usually has output options starting at 0.2ml, Sinfonia Crème’s output starts at 0.05ml, making it ideal for eye product application, for example.
This ‘mix-and-match’ approach allows brands to ensure continuity of experience across a range comprising different products.
In addition, Sandy Gregory, Associate Marketing Director, Global Fragrance and EU Beauty, Silgan Dispensing, told Cosmetics Business that as Sinfonia Crème is a precompression pump, actuation can be a bit forceful. So those companies looking for something smoother can take advantage of the new Sinfonia Crème Soft version, which dispenses much longer, and allows for a short stroke and controlled dosage.
